In 1862, John Divine Jones gave 37 acres of land for a new cemetery
to St. John's Church. The original graveyard, laid out on a rugged
hillside above the church, had proved increasingly difficult for
horse-drawn hearses to negotiate. The new Memorial Cemetery of St.
John's Church was located one mile west of the church and was transformed
in 1918 by the famed Olmsted Brothers, true to the vision of their
father Frederick Law Olmsted for America 's parklands. Recently, the cemetery
was recognized for inclusion in the Archives of American Gardens
of the Smithsonian Institution. Preserving and maintaining this unique
cemetery, its historic chapel and grounds, is the responsibility of a superintendent
and his six-member staff, under the guidance of a committee appointed
by the Vestry.
