In a recent strategic planning survey of our congregation, the music program at St John's was ranked highest among our programs and one that people felt overwhelmingly should continue unchanged. This is a testament to the talents of our organist, Carol Weitner, PhD - an extraordinary musician who has toured Europe and who performs with great beauty and virtuosity every Sunday on our Baroque pipe organ - and to our director of music, Steven Finch, an accomplished singer and conductor who also heads the music program at one of the largest high schools on Long Island and conducts the Huntington Choral Society as well.
Our music program also underscores the talent and devotion of our Senior and Hand Bell choirs – which together have more than forty unpaid members. The Senior Choir rehearses Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings before the 10 a.m. service. In addition to singing every Sunday morning from September through June, the choir presents the annual Mary Nicholas concert for the entire community on the first Sunday evening in December. This concert includes professional soloists and orchestral musicians as well as a performance by the Bell Choir.
A special Bach Cantata performance is also an annual event performed during a Sunday morning service in the spring, featuring soloists and a small orchestra.
Our music is drawn from the wealth of classical compositions of the masters celebrating our faith. Recently we've added a children's music program to augment our youth education program with the hope that it will engender a Junior Choir.
