 WORSHIP

St. John's is very much a traditional church, with Morning Prayer alternating with Holy Communion at the main Sunday service. When Churchill Pinder was called ten years ago the church had just converted from the 1928 Prayer Book and he, working with the Vestry, over the years increased Communion at the main service and moved the altar out from the wall, slightly closer to the congregation.  All present are invited to come forward to receive Communion or a blessing.

For Morning Prayer it is customary for clergy to vest in cassock, surplice, hood and tippet. At the Eucharist, an alb is worn with stole. The parish is accustomed to the said services, vs. sung. The choir sings at each 10 a.m. service.

Preaching is very important to the congregation. They like a well-prepared message that is lectionary-based, challenges their intellect, affirms skepticism yet proclaims faith and invites them into a deeper knowledge of God.

There are two main liturgies and one children's service every Sunday except holidays.  Out of 471 active families totaling 1,374 people listed in the parish census, about 220 attend these liturgies on most Sundays other than major holidays. Rite I is celebrated at 8 a.m., which is without choir. The average attendance at 8 a.m. is thirty-five during the school year and twenty-five in the summer.

The main service is at 10 a.m. with organ and choir during the academic year.  The Choral Eucharist is celebrated on the first, third and fifth Sundays and on Principal Feast Days. Morning Prayer is used on the second and fourth Sundays.
